Narrative In Pursuance Of Books Les Grandes Marées
"Poulin is a master of imagery and dialogue: They rest like froth on top of something much more murky and morose: an underlying fear of emptiness."-The Silhouette
Peacefully employed on an uninhabited island, a translator of comic strips (codename Teddy Bear) lives in the company of his dictionaries, his marauding cat, Matousalem, and his tennis ball machine (the Prince). Convinced that the translator's happiness is in jeopardy, his boss helicopters in a few solitude-seeking companions-the beautiful and elusive Marie with her flirtatious cat Moustache; the seductive nudist, Featherhead; Professor Moccasin, the half-deaf comic strip scholar; the moody and contradictory Author; the Ordinary Man; and the Organizer, sent to "sensitize the population." As the spring tides drag ocean debris onto the shore, Teddy Bear and his companions seek out their own solitudes in this hilarious philosophical fable.
Jacques Poulin's novels include Volkswagen Blues (a finalist for Canada Reads 2005) and La tournée d'automne (Autumn Rounds). Poulin received the 1978 Governor General's Award for Les Grandes Marées(Spring Tides) and the Molson Prize for lifetime artistic contribution in 1990 and 2000. He lives in Québec.

It tells the fable of a translator of comic strips who moves to a small abandoned island in the middle of the St. Lawrence River because he cannot feel at home in his society. His supportive employer who wants him to be happy alters his paper's work procedures to accommodate the distressed comic strip translator. After a short period, the employer concludes that the author is unhappy in his solitude

very easy read, I like the way the author cut the fat out of the story, making it void of dull moments. Read this book for school and appreciated the choice
Les Grandes Marées by Jacques Poulin is exactly what one would expect from a Canadian book; almost too kind, blend, and frankly not that interesting. Had to read that book for a class and I despised it. The characters are boring and self-centered, and the author is trying too hard to make it like a society's critique. The individualism of the characters, mainly Teddy and Marie get tasteless after a few chapters. I would not recommend this to anyone. The end is like the entire book, unclear and
Bon au début, avait du potentiel, mais très long pour pas grand chose. Je ne le recommande pas.EDIT: J'y ai pensé. J'aime vraiment pas ce livre. Il est la cause de ma mauvaise note en français!!!!
I had to read this for a class in college. I could literally skip some paragraphs and it wouldn't even make a difference. I found it really boring to read, as it feels like nothing truly interesting is happening.
