Judgment Epithetical Books Blithe Spirit

An energetic, wry, playful take on Noël Coward's classic, L.A. Theatre Works Blithe Spirit is worth a listen if you like Oscar Wilde-lite.

A ghost story. It's a frivolous comedy but it's also a genuine ghost story with some rather dark elements. Coward was an extremely witty writer. Long ago I had the wrong idea about him, I thought his work was going to be stuffy and boring, and that he was merely another representative of an appalling class-ridden establishment. But no, in fact there are subversive aspects to his work. I want to read more of his plays now.

I saw this movie years and years ago, but I've never seen it on stage and only vaguely remembered it. I know that stuff about dead people reappearing, even when it's merely comedy, always sort of gives me the heebie jeebies, and this is no exception. It's Noel Coward, it's of course well done, but not really a favorite.

Witty and pointed.This starts off clever enough, but there's an undercurrent, while not quite the Hemingway school of male/female relationships, that's bitter. Eau de Badgered Male. Reminds me of mean spirited cocktail parties where everyone's smile is a bit sharp.

When a séance brings back the ghost of his first wife, a man is caught between his current and former spouses. This play has some good moments and witty lines, but I didnt love it. It kept getting close to being brilliant, but it never quite sustains the potential, and theres an underlying sexism that put me off. Frankly, maybe the issue isnt with the women the main character marries. Maybe the issue is with him. Quasi recommended.

A delightful madcap (and maddeningly sexist at times) romp starring a "successful" medium, a rather annoying man, and his first and second wives. In 2015, I took off work to catch a matinee of the touring production with Angela Lansbury, and I regret nothing. Sheand the entire castbrought such sparkle and physical comedy to Coward's script. Much as with Private Lives, the script isn't great on its own: it needs an excellent cast to bring life and spirit (ha!) to the words.

I enjoyed reading this play -- it certainly was rather humorous (Madame Arcarti is a marvellous character!). Coward explores superstition, the inequalities of the class system and the breaking of convention in this mystical piece.
